Cleaning methods employed by SERVPRO certified technicians
Cleaning and restoring homes and offices following a flood is almost routine for New Orleans. Cleaning property and putting everything back together again after a fire is an entirely different set of problems.
Fortunately, SERVPRO has the solutions for New Orleans fire damage. Our restoration teams train extensively to remove smoke and root residues and return both structural and personal property to its original condition.
When smoke from a fire leaves behind light, non-greasy residues, technicians use Dry Wiping to remove them. Tools include sponges, dusting cloths, and feather dusters. If the residue layer is thick, they have the option to use vacuums to remove the bulk of the residue and then wipe down the surfaces.
If the residue is a little heavier and sticky, our restoration teams use Wet Wiping. They start by adding water to the sponges or cleaning cloths. In some cases, they saturate the surface with water before wiping. For thicker layers of the sticky residue, technicians mix in a cleaning agent to break them up before wiping them off the surface.
When saturation might damage an item, SERVPRO technicians use Spray and Wipe. They apply the cleaning agent/water mix with a spray bottle. This cleaning method is very effective on fabrics to prevent the color from running.
If even less moisture is needed, our specialists use Foam Cleaning. Here they use a pump-up sprayer to inject air into the cleaning agent. It allows them to apply a more substantial amount of cleaner without using much water, which is important for upholstered furniture to prevent fabric shrinkage.
For rough surfaces like rock or marble, our teams use Abrasive Cleaning methods. They apply a thicker cleaning agent with steel wool or a wire brush to ensure all of the residue releases from the affected surface.
Finally, there is Immersion Cleaning for very heavy smoke and soot residues. Technicians lower property with heavy residues into a tank filled with a concentrated cleaning solution. Then, they use sound waves to generate bubbles and force them across or through surfaces. This agitation process works very well and does not require any additional hand scrubbing.
